Woodlands Theme Bath
Libby Palmieri, House of L, Solon, OH

Tucked into a beautiful wooded lot, this home required a bath renovation that would keep to the former bathroom’s existing footprint while adding custom touches, a fresh new aesthetic and improved functionality.
Originally part of a builder model home, the bath had a floorplan that largely worked for the client, but the whole space needed more of a “personal touch.” Libby Palmieri used the “Woodlands” theme to anchor the space with a one-of-a-kind tile mosaic work of art; the rest of the finishes and colors were then chosen to match or complement this focal point.
Adding aesthetic and functional upgrades without expanding the space posed some challenges, and Palmieri had to get creative to maximize the existing space. To address the client’s desire for a make-up area, she designed a custom, integrated make-up vanity that, when closed, disappears into the main bath vanity. When open, the vanity allows the client to comfortably sit and access her beauty products, while viewing a large personal mirror.
The deck-mounted tub was replaced with a modern, free-standing soaking tub from Victoria + Albert with Brizo’s Rook freestanding floor-mount tub filler, opening up the space. Palmieri then enclosed the majority of the shower with glass to further the sense of spaciousness.
The shower adds a sense of luxury with its Brizo four-function raincan showerhead, touch-clean body sprays and wall-mount hand shower, along with a 10″ Diameter Ultra Thin Round Showerhead from California Faucets.
Tile plays a key role in the design, from the Vihara 1″x4″ Iridescent tile from Sonoma Tilemakers to the Artistic Tile flooring, which adds an interesting geometric element. The space is finished off with distinctive sconce lighting from Visual Comfort and a Currey & Co. Haywood chandelier that adds another “woodsy” note.

A Place for Pampering
Jeanine Yancy, KSI Kitchen & Bath, Brighton, MI

Seeking refuge from their hectic schedules, the clients tasked Jeanine Yancy with renovating their expansive master bath and creating a place where they would feel pampered.
An outdated, too-high whirlpool tub and unused toilet room needed updating, while a shower drain problem also had to be addressed.
Yancy used the fireplace and existing trim work around the home as her inspiration. A large double vanity with decorative panels and furniture feet, polished nickel fixtures, and a striking chandelier add elegance and drama, while a dressing table framed by varied heights of Merillat cabinetry and large mirrors placed symmetrically above add balance.
The focal point of the room is the contemporary soaking tub with polished nickel tub filler and intricately designed tile “bathmat” inlaid into the floor. The natural stone was carried into the shower with a banner along the perimeter. Natural stones in the niche add a splash of texture, while a tall white pantry in the toilet room provides linen storage.

WC Inspiration

Inspired by the designer’s renovation of a water closet off the master bath, the clients hired Stephanie Koch to renovate the entire master bath to coordinate with the water closet design, including reconfiguring the space to add a second water closet for the husband.
Koch faced several key challenges, from the outdated radiant flooring beneath the existing tile to the clients’ decision to change from the oval tub they’d selected to a corner whirlpool – after the original tub was framed out. Then, as cabinets were being built into the underutilized space under the tub, the cabinet maker had a last-minute change order as well.
Fortunately, Koch is flexible, and was able to work with her team to find solutions.
The space features several unique aspects, including a striking vanity, an upholstered bench that repurposed the plexiglass legs from a cocktail table and an existing 1920s art deco chandelier that became the focal point of the space after the ceiling height was raised.
