This 460-sq.-ft. space in a Florida penthouse needed to function as both a master bathroom and closet, and deliver the ultimate spa experience, according to designer Sandra Diaz-Velasco. By opening up the previously compartmentalized space, the room welcomed a flood of natural light.
To add even more light, the designer created a custom mirror/chandelier that acts as a sculptural piece, floating over the vanity island in the middle of the space. The island below serves a double purpose as a sink cabinet and dresser. The cabinets throughout are from the Ornare Australe Collection and feature recycled wood, and the vanity is topped with Silestone by Cosentino’s Coral Clay, part of the Basiq collection. The faucet is Fantini’s Milano in Matte British Gold. The vanity area also features Dekton Galema Solid on the walls.
The wet area is separated from the dry area by an LED floor strip light, and continues the spa theme with a custom Tecnografica blue wall panel from Twill & Texture around the window that echoes the ocean view and sky outside. The Mastella VOV White tub anchors the space, with moon-inspired light from Vibia Lighting above and Fantini Nostrome faucet in Matte British Gold. The adjacent shower area, which includes a MrSteam steam shower, features Grassi Pietri Marble Emperador tiles in Light Bamboo finish, along with Fantini Milano fittings.
The suite also includes a private water closet with Kohler Veil Wall-Hung Intelligence One-Piece Toilet. Flooring throughout is Marble Emperador tiles in Light.
The entire space is fully automated, with electrical, plumbing, home automation, steam therapy, lighting and chromatherapy all integrated. The LED lighting is activated by presence sensors, so the space is only illuminated when in use.

Private Retreat

When a young couple purchased this circa 1993 home, they hired the original architect, along with designer Lenore Weiss, to reimagine the whole space in a more contemporary way while maintaining some of its best details, including optimum views of the surrounding woods and Lake Michigan. The couple also wanted the home to be filled with natural light, and designed as a private retreat.
The master bath’s 10′ ceilings give the space an expansive feel, while a dropped ceiling along the central axis over the tub and anchoring the fireplace wall deliver a cozier vibe. Original tall windows and glass door provide natural light and views to the lake.
Clerestory windows were added high above the couple’s Kohler Underscore Contemporary soaking tub, which was paired with VOLA tub faucet and faces a built-in fireplace and television.
Separate lavatories surround the fireplace, fashioned from sapele wood and waterfall edge countertops in Iceberg quartzite. Included in each is a Wymara Single Bowl Sink from MTI Baths with VOLA Wall Mounted One Handle Lavatory Faucet.
Transceramica Bright Onyx Porcelain Tiles give the shower a bright, organic look, while Franz Viegener Contemporary Volume Control and Trim and Dornbracht showerhead and handheld head provide beauty and function. A steam shower and individual water closets fitted with Kohler San Souci toilets are also part of the design.

When creating this master bath retreat, Shea Pumarejo had a lot of boxes to check: Walls had to be moved, a shower large enough for two people needed to be created and a glass block wall needed to be replaced with a picture window, among other tasks. The goal was a spa-like retreat with storage and defined spaces.
The picture window was placed along the vanity wall, with a makeup vanity directly below the window for the natural light desired. Pendant lights from Restoration Hardware above the space provide additional light. Extending along the wall is the slab front cabinetry from Aries Custom Woodworks, topped with leathered Absolute Black Granite, Kohler sink and Brizo faucet. Above, an LED backlit mirror adds a soft glow.
An entablature with 24″x48″ Colorker’s Invictus Amber tile was created behind and above the tub to define the space and act as a focal point in the room. LED lighting behind the tile provides ambient light. A Brizo tub filler is paired with a tub from MTI Bath’s Designer Collection.
In the adjacent glass-enclosed shower, Plana 6″x12″ and Tessuto 3″x12″ tiles from Sonoma Tilemakers provide an understated linear backdrop. The shower includes a leathered Absolute Black Granite bench, Brizo faucets and illuminated niches.
A Kohler toilet and flooring in Marble Marone complete the space.
